District Parent Advisory Council Healthy Schools Cookbook

Dear Parents and Staff;

The DPAC of SD 91 formed a Healthy Schools Committee last October to assist schools in the implementation phase of legislation involving food and beverages offered in schools. Part of this committee’s work has been the development of a cookbook project.

The cookbook can be used as a tool to healthy eating choices and it will have a special section for school hot lunch menus that will meet all the criteria that hot lunch providers can implement simply. Essentially it will have a best of the best practices across our district. A project of this type is the first in the province.

We are currently seeking recipes from ALL our schools to form this SD 91 cookbook. There will be PRIZES for the top three schools participating, based on per capita recipe submissions. Prizes will be various kitchen items useful to the school in assisting meal programs; such as a food processor for first prize and a basket of various kitchen implements for second and third prizes.

As you consider your submissions, please keep healthy choices in mind. Once the recipes are submitted they will be classified in the choose most, choose sometimes, choose least, as set out in the legislative criteria. Typically "Choose Most" and "Choose Sometimes” recipes are highest in nutrients, least processed, made with whole grain flour, smaller amounts of fat, salt, and sugar.
"Choose Least" recipes tend to be low in key nutrients such as iron, calcium or may be highly salted, sweetened, or processed.
~The Community Nutritionist will also assist us to add nutritional tips to the recipes if needed. We hope to develop some of your recipes into PAC lunch menus (with your permission).

If you have a large serving recipe (20 or more) we are interested in it! Please submit it on the PAC recipe sheet so that we can develop it into a hot lunch menu.

Please have all recipe sheets in by JUNE 16 to your school. Feel free to make copies of the recipe sheet or submit additional recipes on a standard sheet of paper following the outline of the sheet. The more recipes submitted the better chance your school will WIN!! While all our students are enjoying the summer break, we will put the cookbook together and have it printed for distribution in September when we all come back to school.

We would also welcome submissions of artwork from students across the district relating to healthy eating. Please submit them on 81/2 by 11 paper with name and school on the back so that we can give credit where credit is due and use them in the cookbook.

Good morning,

As you are no doubt aware, young workers are among the most likely to suffer from a serious workplace accident.  With summer just around the corner and with many students getting ready for their first jobs.  The District PAC in conjunction with Career Programs would appreciate the opportunity to have a guest speaker come and talk with as many of your respective grade 10 students as possible - others are welcome to attend as well.

Worksafe BC has a number of young individuals who travel the province talking to students about the deadly issue of workplace injury.  These speakers are in great demand to say the least and we have been able to secure the speaking services of Nick Perry (bio below) for the dates of Monday April 21st & Tuesday April 22nd.  The presentation is approximately 45 minutes in length

It is the hope of the District PAC and Career Programs that your students will be afforded the chance to hear Nicks story/presentation in each of your respective buildings.

I have listed the days/time the Nick would be available to present at your school.  I hope arrangements can be made to allow this to happen.

Please let me know if your school can or cannot accommodate the speaker for the dates/times listed below:

April 21 - LDSS in the morning
April 21 - FLESS in the afternoon
April 22 - NVSS in the morning
Aprl 22 - FSJSS in the afternoon

picture of Nick Perry

Nick was 19, when he got a job at a Victoria lumberyard. Six months later 42 loose sheets of lumber weighing 1,200 kilograms fell on him, leaving him an incomplete paraplegic. Today, he is able to walk, but his life is not back to normal. "All that independence that your worked so hard to gain can be taken away from you in a snap of your fingers", he warns. "Know your rights at work, because you can get hurt. Just look at what happened to me."

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call or email

Thanks,
Darren

Welcome to the 07/08 School Year

Well I hope that you all had a wonderful summer and were able to recharge your batteries with some great fun with your family over the summer. Here we are back to the new school year!! It is amazing how fast summer goes, one day you think it will last forever, the next it is buying school supplies and new clothing for the kids.

As you know, the DPAC had our first AGM in June. We are now ready to move forward in working with your PACs and SPCs to assist you in any way you need and in providing information on district and provincial based issues.

The DPAC is currently in budget negotiations with the District. We hope to bring several programs to both parents and students this year. These will hopefully include BCCPAC Advocacy workshops, a major speaker presentation, WCB presentations to high school students, support of a new District Student Advisory body, conference attendances for interested parent leaders, and meeting with each PAC and SPC. We are seeking a total of 16,555.99 to provide services and events. We will present this to the Board at their September meeting on the 17th at Muriel Mould School.

We would like to have every PAC join BCCPAC. Once our budget is approved, we will be in a position to financially support the membership for each PAC with a grant for the $65 fee, or through direct payment of those fees. We only had 4 of 23 eligible groups represented last year. We have a goal of having all 23 represented this year. The membership provides many supports to members and a vote at AGM policy meetings. The last AGM saw resolutions that resulted in the below noted playground grants.  This year, you must be a “member PAC” in order to apply for the 1 million dollar portion of the 4 million playground grants. We will ask two things in return, you have your PAC sign up PRIOR to the Dec 15 eligibility deadline and that you will either take your vote to the AGM, or fill your proxy vote or assign an open proxy to a DPAC member to be carried at the AGM. The votes are important!! We need our district to be represented! A registration form is attached. Please contact the DPAC with any questions.

Every PAC now has a school district email account. All bulletins will be sent out to those accounts which can be accessed either from home or your school. Your school secretary will be able to assist you with your set up. There is a quick link to be able to send your message to all PACs as well as the DPAC. This is another route to enable communication between our PACs and DPAC to share information. To that end, could you also email a list of the names, phone numbers and email of your PAC executives, DPAC Reps and SPC members to dpac@mail.sd91.bc.ca . There are some items where we need to make quick contacts regarding issues and this list will be of great assistance. We need contact information to have your voice included! If you would like your personal email to also be notified for all mailings please indicate so, so that the quick lists can be updated.

The DPAC will be holding regular monthly meetings this year. They will be the third Wednesday of each month at 7 PM. The September 17th meeting will be via teleconference and dial in instructions as well as an agenda will be emailed the week prior. Please get your agenda requests in by Monday the 10th of Sept. All are invited; DPAC reps please ensure you attend. Please look regularly at the DPAC website for updates at http://mail.sd91.bc.ca/~dpac/index .

Just a reminder to all PACs that DPAC rep and SPC members are one year positions. These are to be voted on by secret ballot yearly as stated in the School Act regulations. One SPC member must be an executive PAC member.  Please make sure these details are seen to, in order to maintain the legality of these legislated positions. There will be SPC training sessions announced soon to ensure all SPC members have up to date information and guidelines.

I am sure many of the elementary PACs are interested in the playground gaming grants. I sent out emails during the summer to keep you up to date with details as I got them.

The gaming website at http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/gaming/grants/pacdpac.htm  will have the online application form for the $3 million gaming branch portion of the playground grants. The application period for this year is September to November 15th. There will be an additional application period over each of the next two school years. These grants will be dispersed January 31 of the year following the application. This grant is to cover 80 % of total costs of a playground structure with a max grant of $20,000.

There will be an additional source of funds from BCCPAC http://www.bccpac.bc.ca/whats_new/Whats_New.htm . This grant is the remaining million dollars sponsored by the Ministry of Education. You must be a BCCPAC member PAC at the time of application for this grant. The application period is now to November 30th this year only. Again 80% of the costs of purchases, not including installation costs up to $20,000 are covered.  There will be no dual grants handed out; one grant precludes the other, in clearer terms.

Over the summer, we have had discussions with the District to further assist PACs in acquiring playgrounds. A process has been developed with DPAC and senior administration for PACs to follow as a flow chart during the planning and acquisition of new playground structures. This flow chart will be sent to all of you by Monday Sept 10th. All schools will have the same process to follow and be given the same advantages. We have confirmed that the school district will do all installations at no cost to PACs. This is a huge savings as a playground I was involved in costing $25,000 would have cost an additional $15,000 to install! The district would appreciate volunteer teams to assist in installations to offset costs. A “playground party” can be a real spirit lifting event for a community and I hope you will all consider something along those lines. There is a further savings to PACs in that we have identified a payment process which will have schools do the actual purchase for PACs, saving the taxes. The PAC in turn makes a donation to the SD in their school’s name to make repayment. This will also save each PAC a few thousand dollars. All of this will be outlined in detail in the flow chart which will be released next week.

You will all remember the Supporting Parent Leadership Seminar Series applications that were about last spring. We are happy to announce that Mini Verduzco of W.L. McLeod and Adele Gooding of Grassy EJSS and LDSS are the selected candidates to represent SD91 Lakes Nechako. We look forward to the information they will bring back to our district as they progress through this leadership training.

One more request, could all PACs please let me know when your PAC meetings and SPC meetings are held. We want to do two things with that information, one post those meetings on the web calendar of events for parents to be aware and second to enable scheduling to attend your meetings for information and support.

Please contact me with any questions, comments or concerns. I hope everyone gets off to a great start for the new school year. This one promises to be full of potential for parental involvement in our district!

March 8, 2007

Welcome to the DPAC Website!!!!

It has now been two weeks that I have held the position of DPAC Chair and I am excited about all that we have already accomplished and about plans we have to support
parent groups in our schools.

The construction of this website is one of the first accomplishments. We felt that it was vital to have an avenue to get information out in our diverse district. We also wanted to provide a one stop place for ALL parents to receive information and pose questions and concerns. The site is under construction and will be updated regularly. Please email any questions to me at [ mailto:racher67@telus.net ]. We also have plans to have a message board system added in the near future for your convenience.

We had two members attend the Interactive Innovations 2007 Conference in Prince George for which you will find a report on this website. Parents who may be interested in future educational events are urged to send an email to myself.

We also were able to participate in the selection process of our new Superintendent. The candidates all had individual qualities that were strong but I believe the correct candidate was chosen. We look forward to working with Ray Lemoigne as we build and establish DPAC.

Please take a look at the DPAC/PAC contacts page. If you see information that is missing or incorrect for your school, or have interest in filling a DPAC representative position please email me. DPAC representatives are needed in order to get information down to individual PAC’s. I would encourage all PAC Chairs to have a DPAC section in their meeting agendas in order to address this information.

We can also provide the service of having your school’s PAC minutes posted to this website so that they can be read by all parents from the comfort of their home or office as their time allows. I hope that all school PAC’s will take advantage of this opportunity. You can email the minutes to me for posting.

I look forward to DPAC evolving into what the parents of our district need. We are endeavoring to provide communication avenues and a collective parental voice to the District, and would like to hear your ideas. We would also like for more parents to get involved as we have several positions to fill.
