Lakes District Secondary School (LDSS), part of School District No. 91 Nechako Lakes, is located in Burns Lake, BC Canada. LDSS is the newest school in the district and is now seven years old. The school serves students from grade 8 to 12 in a modern and well equipped facility featuring a permanent drama stage, multi-purpose lunchroom, full service industrial shops and large gym/fitness area.

Our enrollment of 445 has 34% Aboriginal ancestry students, compared to the provincial average of 10%. We are proud to serve six local First Nations bands (Burns Lake, Lake Babine, Cheslatta Carrier, Wet’suwet’en, Skin Tyee and Nee Tahi-Buhn).

The LDSS staff consists of 26 teachers, 19 support staff, four custodians, principal and vice principal. ~A dedicated and experienced teaching and support staff work hard to ensure that students receive quality education.

Bi-weekly newsletters, a marquee sign, website updates and PAC meetings keep students, parents and the community informed about activities and events occurring at our school.

In the 2010/11 school year, LDSS will implement several new initiatives to increase student learning. They include:

  • Daily Student Support (DSS)  - Time within the day to get extra assistance with assignments, homework and enrichment activities.
  • Teacher Collaboration – Weekly time for teachers to focus on curriculum, assessment and professional practice to improve student learning.
  • The Learning Centre – A centralized learning assistance room that will offer extra support for students from regular classes.

In addition to the our new initiatives, LDSS will continue to offer Special Education classes for identified students and alternate programs for students who have struggled in regular classes.

LDSS offers a full array of electives and academic courses that lead to graduation and post-secondary entrance.  We are able to offer additional courses in partnership with our district distant-learning school, EBUS Academy.

A variety of fine arts courses are available to students, including drama, dance, art, and visual arts media technology. ~Both curricular and extra-curricular offerings enable students to develop their physical, emotional, social and intellectual potentials.

Athletics for 2010-2011 is supported by dedicated coaches and community volunteers, and includes soccer, golf, mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding, volleyball, and basketball.
