Lakes District Secondary School, part of School District No. 91 Nechako Lakes, is located in Burns Lake, BC Canada.  The newest school in the school district is now six years old and serves students from grade 8 to 12 including the six First Nations bands of the area (Burns Lake, Lake Babine, Cheslatta Carrier, Wet’suwet’en, Skin Tyee and Nee Tahi-Buhn.)

Our enrollment population of 455 has 33% Aboriginal Ancestry students, compared to the provincial average of 10%.

Our staff consists of 29 teachers, 20 support staff, four custodians, a Drug and Alcohol counsellor, our principal and vice principal.  A dedicated and experienced teaching and support staff work to ensure that students receive the best possible regular and support programs (learning assistance, special education, alternate education and enrichment) with the resources available.

Bi-weekly newsletters keep students, parents and the community informed about activities, events, plans, meetings and concerns.

The school has an active Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and enjoys strong parent and community support. This year’s projects included raising and allocating funds for an outside basketball court, sports, athletics, arts, dances, honour roll recognition, student of the month.  PAC is forward thinking and planning new ways to become involved with teachers and students.

The LDSS School Planning Council (SPC) consists of three elected parents and were elected in the fall of the school year.  All of the members are in their first year on the LDSS SPC. The SPC has met a number of times this year to discuss the data and school growth.

We have three special education programs, called Choices, Endeavours and Special Ed, which serve students identified with special needs. In addition, two alternate programs, Senior Alternate and Storefront were designed to meet the needs of students who have not been successful in regular classes. We introduced an English as a Second Dialect program last year. Data on students with IEPs are included in the growth plan for the first time this year.

We continue to be fortunate to offer senior level courses with small class sizes. We are looking into alternative enrichment programs, such as AVID, Destination Imagination or Odyssey of the Mind and further professional development and teacher training.  A variety of fine arts courses are available to students including drama, dance, art, and visual arts media technology.  Both curricular and extra-curricular offerings enable students to develop their physical, emotional, social and intellectual potentials.

Extra-curricular support for 2008-2009 school year is supported through the School District. Support for students will be available in the areas of athletics, the arts and special enrichment activities/programs.
